The Jack Hill Pinot Noir (2022) comes exclusively from the Jack Hill Vineyard overlooking Bodega Valley. Due to its proximity to the coast (about six miles) and the cooler maritime climate, this is the latest ripening Pinot Noir that Anthill Farms Winery produces. The vineyard is planted to Calera and 115 Clones of Pinot on Goldridge Soil. The use of whole cluster and native yeast fermentation adds to the freshness of the wine. It's aged for 12 months in 30% new French oak before bottling and release. 150 cases produced. This is the first time this particular wine has been available on the East Coast with only five cases being released in Virginia.
From the winery:
Dark ruby with purple rim. Incredibly intense and singular aromatic nose, with a bouquet of black cherry, white strawberry, ripe plum and tea leaf. So very elegant and still succulently textured. The whole cluster added tremendous character, and still is folded into the wine from the power of the low yields of 1.5 tons/acre, with intense flavors mirroring the aromas coming from this site near Freestone. Jack Hill is by far the wine to open hours before drinking, or take your time, as it continues to change with each smell and sip, becoming seamless, long, and with energetic and refreshing acids. Fantastic now with air, but excited to see where this wine goes over the next decade.
Anthill Farms is an exciting project that focuses on producing exceptional Pinot Noir from a broad range of North Coast vineyards. The properties are managed with intensive and meticulous farming practices, with minimal ecological impact. As for winemaking, there are two unchanging goals: to make wines that express the growing site and the characteristics of the vintage above all else, and to make wines that, simply put, taste good. These goals require gentle handling from crushing to bottling, judicious use of oak, and, perhaps most importantly, leaving the wine alone as much as possible.
