Fortunate Son "The Diplomat" Red Wine

Product Details

From the Winemaker: This is a wine which Winston Churchill would have been drinking whilst insulting Hitler or some pandering moron. The wine is dark and rich and is not for the faint of heart, if you are looking for a light table wine, go away, quickly…this is wine for drinking, eating and making love.

Vintage Notes — The 2019 vintage was in every way a staggeringly great to me. I knew then, as I watched the vintage progress and when I finally and methodically picked the fruit block by block, passing through again and again to get just the perfect clusters, the fruit, those intense flavors, the richness were something incredible, even more so now, looking back, knowing now that the following year would bring so much carnage. How lucky I was, and I didn’t even know it.

Vineyard Notes — Sourced from small, family vineyards, (in some cases for 3-4 generations) that are farmed with great care and attention. These vineyards (some are 80+ years old) have been brought together, actually woven together, so the magical fruit could at last become Fortunate Son.

Composition — Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and a very small fraction of Petite Sirah.

Cooperage — Aged for 30-32 months in the finest French oak barrique. The stave wood is hand-selected for ultra-tight grain, then air dried for three years before being made into barrels.

Appellation — Napa Valley

Fortunate Son is the newest wine project from critically acclaimed winemaker Jayson Woodbridge of Hundred Acre fame. The wines are sourced from heritage micro-block sites that showcase the quality of the vineyards that are the bedrock of the early history of the Napa Valley.

Each Fortunate Son wine is made with the same meticulous winemaking and farming practices as his flagship wine Hundred Acre. They represent a commitment to quality and craftsmanship that very few wineries in the world can match.

Settling in the Napa Valley  when it was still largely a hostile, untamed wilderness, David Fulton was one of the strong, resourceful pioneers who transformed the valley – a warrior and dreamer who not only planted one of the first vineyards but also worked as a blacksmith, ran the town’s saddlery and invented the Fulton Plow, which gave a single man with a single horse the freedom to farmland and feed his family. Though he died young, David Fulton made his mark on the landscape.

His winery stayed in the family for three generations, making it the longest continuously family-owned and operated vineyard in the U.S., farmed with due care, attention and integrity, right down to hand-picking the grapes. It is a piece of living history, filled with more than a century’s worth of experience.

So, when the Fultons decided it was time to hand on their heritage to someone who would restore the property and preserve its legacy, Jayson Woodbridge knew he had found the perfect heartland for Fortunate Son.

Varietals: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Sirah

Region: Napa Valley, California
